Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi is set to make history as the first Indian actor chosen to present an award at the 54th International Emmy Awards, taking place in New York on November 23, 2026.

The announcement marks a major milestone for Indian cinema on the global stage, placing Sethupathi among the presenters at a ceremony that honours television excellence produced outside the United States.

A historic first for Indian actors

While Priyanka Chopra previously presented alongside Tom Hiddleston at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2016, Sethupathi holds the unique distinction of being the first Indian actor invited to present at the International Emmy Awards ceremony.

Kavita Gupta, a producer and board member of the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, played a key role in bringing Sethupathi to the platform. Gupta previously facilitated comedian Vir Das hosting the International Emmy Awards in 2024, following his award win for Vir Das: Landing in 2023.

Current and upcoming work

Sethupathi was recently seen starring in Baththa, a period drama set in 1986 Madras, where he plays a feared gangster whose perspective on life shifts after being accidentally locked in an empty school toilet with an eight-year-old boy.

Looking ahead, the actor is set to star alongside Sai Pallavi in director Mani Ratnam’s romantic drama Inji Vellam, one of the most anticipated Tamil films in the pipeline.

Hollywood interest in Maharaja

Adding to his global footprint, Sethupathi’s hit 2024 Tamil thriller Maharaja is officially eyeing a Hollywood remake. Following a strong theatrical run in China that grossed over Rs 91 crore, a Hollywood agency acquired the rights to adapt the project.

Producer Sudhan Sundaram confirmed the development, noting that the agency is actively packaging the film for an A-list star and aiming for production to begin next year. Addressing online speculation about actor Matthew McConaughey’s potential involvement, Sundaram stated that while McConaughey may be among those approached, official casting and studio announcements remain forthcoming.

The Emmy invitation caps a remarkable run for Sethupathi, whose work has increasingly travelled beyond Tamil cinema to audiences in China, Hollywood and now the international television stage in New York.
