Shah Rukh Khan’s King Sets Record Rs 175 Crore Overseas Deal
Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming film King has reportedly secured a record-breaking overseas distribution deal worth Rs 175 crore, the biggest overseas rights deal ever for an Indian film. Dubai-based Phars Films has acquired the film’s international theatrical rights for a minimum guarantee of Rs 175 crore, over USD 18 million, according to a Pinkvilla report published on October 30, 2026.
A Record No Indian Film Has Touched Before
No Indian film has previously fetched an overseas minimum guarantee of even Rs 100 crore, which makes the reported Rs 175 crore figure unprecedented. Phars Films replaces Yash Raj Films (YRF), which was earlier expected to handle King’s worldwide release and had distributed Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan and Jawan internationally in 2023.
Phars Films is no newcomer to overseas distribution. The Dubai-headquartered company has worked alongside YRF on several titles and independently distributed Prabhas-starrer Saaho. Under its usual strategy, Phars is expected to handle the Middle East directly while selling other territories to local partners. Reports say it has already received a strong offer from Germany, while North America and the United Kingdom — markets YRF previously handled through its own offices — are likely to see the biggest changes.
The Break-Even Mountain
The scale of the deal sets a daunting box-office target. Since overseas distributors typically retain only around 50 percent of gross collections, trade estimates cited by multiple outlets say King would need overseas collections of roughly USD 37–40 million (around Rs 350–375 crore) merely to recover the minimum guarantee. Some estimates put the effective target closer to USD 48–50 million, given premium sub-distribution deals.
For context, both Pathaan and Jawan reportedly collected around Rs 400 crore each in overseas markets in 2023. King would therefore need a performance comparable to Shah Rukh Khan’s two post-COVID blockbusters to justify the record investment — a tall order, but one the trade clearly believes is possible.
King: Cast, Director and Release Date
King is directed by Siddharth Anand, reuniting him with Shah Rukh Khan after their 2023 hit Pathaan. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan in the lead, with Suhana Khan marking her big-screen debut alongside her father. The ensemble cast includes Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Arshad Warsi, Jaideep Ahlawat and Raghav Juyal. It is produced by Gauri Khan, Siddharth Anand and Mamta Anand under Red Chillies Entertainment and Marflix Pictures.
The film is set to arrive in theatres on December 24, 2026, during the lucrative Christmas and New Year holiday season. It will face stiff competition from Hollywood releases such as Avengers: Doomsday and Dune Part 3, both slated for December 18.
Why the Trade Is Betting Big
Reports describe King as one of the biggest Bollywood films ever made, and the record overseas deal is being read as a vote of confidence in Shah Rukh Khan’s international pull. The film’s overseas rights deal also follows the strong pre-release momentum seen across Indian cinema this week, including Ramayana Part 1’s advance bookings and the continuing run of Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2, which crossed Rs 300 crore net in India in its first week.
It is important to note that the Rs 175 crore figure comes from trade reports and has not been officially confirmed by the producers or the distributor. Final box-office outcomes will depend on theatrical performance, distribution costs and the terms of the agreement.
