Kieron Pollard Named Mumbai Indians Head Coach for IPL 2027
Mumbai Indians have appointed Kieron Pollard as their new head coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season, ending one of the most enduring player-to-coach associations in franchise cricket’s history with a landmark promotion. The five-time champions announced the decision on Saturday, October 24, 2026, elevating the 39-year-old West Indian to the top job after he served as the team’s batting coach for four seasons.
Pollard takes over from Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene, who stepped down earlier this month after a decade-long association with the franchise across two stints, the most recent from 2024 to 2026. Reuters reported that Pollard will lead the side into the 2027 season.
A 16-Year One-Family Story
Pollard’s association with Mumbai Indians stretches back 16 years — one of the longest uninterrupted relationships in the IPL. The franchise bought him ahead of the 2010 season, and he represented only Mumbai Indians in the IPL, from his debut in 2010 through his final appearance in the 2022 edition.
Over that career, Pollard became a cornerstone of the most successful period in the club’s history. He won five IPL titles with Mumbai in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020, and also lifted the Champions League T20 in 2011 and 2013. He retired from playing the IPL in November 2022 and immediately joined the coaching staff as batting coach from the 2023 season.
The Numbers Behind the Legend
Pollard amassed 3,412 runs in the IPL at a strike rate of 147.32, and with the ball and in the field he built a reputation as one of the finest all-round finishers the league has seen. He holds the record for the second-most appearances by an overseas player in IPL history, behind only Sunil Narine.
“It is an honour to take on the role of head coach of Mumbai Indians. MI has been a huge part of my life and career, and the bond I share with this team, the players and the Paltan means a great deal to me,” Pollard said in a statement issued by the franchise.
Franchise co-owner Nita Ambani said Pollard had given the team “many unforgettable moments” as a player and continued to share his experience and passion as a coach. “We are delighted to see him take on this new responsibility as head coach,” she said.
The Challenge Ahead
Mumbai Indians are the joint most successful side in IPL history with five titles, but the last of those came in 2020 — a seven-season title drought that represents the franchise’s longest trophy-less run. Reuters noted that the team has finished outside the playoffs in four of the past six seasons.
For the former West Indies T20 captain, who also led the West Indies to the 2012 T20 World Cup title, the task is clear: end the drought and rebuild the winning culture he was central to creating as a player.
