Ranabaali Hits Cinemas Worldwide: Vijay Deverakonda’s Period Action Drama — Cast, Story and Early Buzz
Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna’s period action drama Ranabaali released worldwide on October 16, 2026, during the Dussehra festive window, becoming one of the biggest pan-India releases of the season.
The story
Ranabaali is set in colonial-era South India during the Great Famine of 1876–78, presenting a fictionalised account of ordinary people’s suffering under British rule. Deverakonda plays Singanamala Bobbili Ranabaali, a warrior from an imagined Rayalaseema village who rises against colonial oppression. Rashmika Mandanna plays Jayamma, Ranabaali’s wife, while Hollywood actor Arnold Vosloo — known for The Mummy — plays the British officer Sir Theodore Hector.
The makers describe the project as a story passed down through generations — a cinematic reconstruction of an era built from real accounts and oral histories, not a conventional biopic.
Cast and crew
Directed by Rahul Sankrityan (of Taxiwaala fame), the film is produced by Naveen Yerneni and Ravi Shankar under Mythri Movie Makers, with T-Series presenting. Music is by Ajay–Atul and cinematography by Nirav Shah. It marks the third on-screen collaboration between Deverakonda and Mandanna after Geetha Govindam and Dear Comrade — and their first film together since their marriage in February.
Certification and release
The film was cleared with a U/A certificate by India’s Central Board of Film Certification and released with a runtime of approximately 2 hours 50 minutes. The release had originally been scheduled for September 11 before being pushed back by over a month. Advance bookings opened ahead of the October 16 launch.
Early buzz
Reviews began rolling in over the opening weekend, with trade watchers closely tracking the film’s box-office performance. Trade circles note that the scale of the production, the historical setting and the star pairing make Ranabaali one of the films to watch in the 2026 festive-season calendar.
